Welcome to the website for ART SHEFFIELD 05: Spectator T
an ambitious city-wide contemporary art event which took place within Sheffield’s
major galleries, project spaces, non-gallery venues and public sites from
28 October to 27 November 2005.
For the event, Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum (SCAF) developed a challenging
programming structure and commissioned artist-curator Gavin Wade to propose
a context for the event. Gavin wrote a contextual piece of writing around
a fictional “curatorial character” called Tony T (Spectator T).

texts.
Artists were invited to send in proposals responding to Spectator T. There
was a huge interest from artists based locally, all around the UK and internationally,
and many of their responses are posted on this site.
Work was selected from the submissions, and the resulting programme
was an exciting mix of existing works and new commissions from both established
and emerging artists.
A linked symposium took place on 28 October with contributions from Gavin
Wade, external commentators JJ Charlesworth and Sally O'Reilly, SCAF Director
Steve Dutton, and exhibiting artists Becky Shaw, Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan.
Transcriptions of the symposium can be downloaded from the programme
page.
Images of the works shown in ART SHEFFIELD 05: Spectator T are also available
to view on the programme page.
